Even if you’ve been to caverns around America, the size and scope of Carlsbad is simply jaw-dropping and will ruin all other cave experiences for you. The closest camping to Carlsbad Caverns is Whites City at the end of the road just outside of the park. It’s pretty much like being in a rest stop, but it’s close and the price is fair. We left the coach at Whites and rode our ebikes into the park each day. Ebikes are a good idea since the Visitor Center access road in is a very steep 7 miles. Heading up the road in the morning we passed a herd of big horn sheep traversing the ridge directly above our heads. To compliment our underworld exploration, we took the bikes on a dirt and gravel trail in the backroads of the park for an above world adventure.
