We took a tent to camp in the Everglades for a week in the spring. It had been quite a few years since we had tent camped out of a truck. Let me tell you, the bugs in the ‘glades are real. The most remote campground at the end of the park (Flamingo) is basically owned by the mosquitoes. Because it is a National Park there is no insect control used. We lasted three days before relocating to the upper park in the tall pines. Sounds lame, but it was two days longer than everyone else around us. The ‘boardwalk-style’ hikes at the north of the park are quite pretty and easily accessible by anyone. It is a long 35 miles to Flamingo. The hikes in that area are wild, choked with poison wood trees, and great for birding. The most popular feature of Flamingo is the marina and access to the inland waterways. We found the living hard but well worth it once you became one with the ‘glades vibe.
