We pushed the visit weather-wise by heading to the park in March. Those are some cold nights! but, great weather for hiking hills. Smoky Mountain is the most visited national park, fortunately they do have a decent amount of first come, first serve spaces. Outside of the park on the Tennessee side is Pidgeon Fork which is basically a huge touristy vacation town. We stayed there too, in a private campground and it was great – especially if you like go-cart racing or T-shirts. The National park has multiple entrances with each section of the park having a distinct vibe. The best hiking is on the Tennessee side. Some of the roads were still closed for snow, but we had our ebikes and road them anyway. The best was the road to Clingman’s Dome. There was 200yards of pushing your bike through snow but for the most part the six mile road was clear. Plus, it was virtually empty of people! The other nice feature of the extreme shoulder seasons is the visibility through the trees on the hikes. Don’t let the cold nights stop you.
