We stayed in a Navy Famcamp a bit outside of town and rode our bikes in each day. That in itself is an experience, and probably not one I would recommend. San Diego is a beautiful city. We spent the better part of the winter of 2019 there and were shopping for houses before we left. Fortunately, sticker shock kept us from pulling the trigger. Is it wrong if your favorite place to visit is called The Donut Bar? San Diego is a true Navy town. I loved that they had a A-6 on the catapult at the USS Midway museum. That probably will not make any difference to you if you visit, but it sold the city for me.
